Is that Love..Racehorse

Trainer John Nallen got an instant return on recent purchase, "Is That Love" with the gelding running out a comfortable winner of the opening Manguard Plus Claiming Race at Leopardstown.

Bought in Killarney last month, the six-year-old was making his first appearance for the Tipperary based trainer, having previously raced for James McAuley.

Prominent in the initial stages of this race, winning jockey Sean Bowen was content to track the leaders in the hope that the gaps would appear.
Staying on best close home, Is That Love headed Tai Sing Yeh to run out a three-quarter-length winner.
Assistant trainer 'Corky' Carroll said:- “We only have him a few weeks. He's a straightforward, simple horse to train.

“He's after doing his job for us. Sean was keeping an eye on him and he picked him out in Killarney.

Kilbeggan bumper winner turns over Irish Derby fifth.

Rated 106 and fifth in the Irish Derby, Up And Under was sent off 8/13 for the Tote.ie Never Beaten By SP (QR) Maiden but favourite backers would have been uneasy quite a long way from home and second reserve Minella Mate came home in front to cause a 66/1 boilover.

Owned and trained by John Nallen, the winner was always handy under John Gleeson who kicked for home rounding the home turn. The Shantou gelding stayed on well to score by a length and three quarters. Up And Under, struggling in fourth over a furlong out, did stay on to grab second spot but overall it was a flat performance from the market leader.

Assistant trainer 'Corky' Carroll said afterwards: “It was a bit of a surprise on the day but this horse works extremely well up the Old Vic.

“He won his bumper and we probably ran him over too far first time over hurdles.

“We said we'd drop him back to a mile-and-a-half with Galway in mind. We knew he'd get up the hill after staying two miles in his bumper so we rode him good and positive and he gave him a great ride.

“We'll have to chat to the boss now and see what the plans are.”


Gleeson told RTE: "I rang John (Nallen) about eleven o'clock this morning when I saw he was second reserve and I just said to him, in case he gets in, I'd love to ride him. I won a bumper on him in Kilbeggan so I'm delighted.

"He was a bit tricky to load, he's a bit of a character and gets a bit wound up. We put the red hood on him today going down and once he was in, he stood there well. He has plenty of ability event though he's a bit giddy."

A three-time winner on Kempton's all-weather track when trained by Clive Cox, Pinball Wizard gained his first success in Ireland when landing the first division of the one-mile handicap at odds of 25/1.

Owned and trained by John Nallen and ridden by his nephew Sean Bowen, the Dark Angel gelding was running for the first time since last August. Held up in mid-division, he made good headway early in the straight and was ridden to lead over a furlong out before staying on well to beat Bright Moment by a length and a quarter.

“He did it nicely from a bad draw. It was his first run back, since running over hurdles in Tramore, and I thought he'd like the quick ground, that trip and he was back on a lovely mark,” said Bowen.

“Corky (Carroll) and the team at home do a great job, all the horses are running well. With Cristal Clere and Mercurial we have three nice Flat horses to tip away with over the summer.”

Minella Cocooner started the Dublin Racing Festival with a bang for Willie Mullins in the N.L.P. Solicitors Novice Hurdle.

Danny Mullins excelled as Minella Cocooner started the Dublin Racing Festival with a bang for Willie Mullins.  Minella Cocooner looked a sitting duck with three furlongs to run, with Davy Russell moving up menacingly on the favourite Hollow Games, Minella Cocooner (11-1) was just waiting in front.

When Mullins pushed the button he took three lengths out of the field and immediately had the rest in trouble and his jockey was once again celebrating Grade One success on a supposed second-string from the stable.

It was Gordon Elliott’s Minella Crooner who stayed on best to take second.
